From the 1995 liner notes: "What you’re clutching here in your grubby little paws isn’t just another slab of aluminum and plastic encoded with millions of digital triggers - - it’s a slice of time. On October 11, 1994, Ron Anderson (of The Molecules, Happy New Year, and others) and Tatsuya Yoshida (half of Tokyo monster duo Ruins and longtime fixture in the Japanese music underground) sequestered themselves in Anderson’s Night Toast Studios, laying down the basic tracks for this here CD (Anderson subsequently augmented the session tapes with a smattering of overdubs). The results of this collusion between two improvisational innovators from opposite sides of the globe - - equal parts psychic discourse, conceptual summit and mutual admiration society - - is an electrifying synthesis of styles, sort of a Molecular Ruins, if you will. That these 15 tracks are essentially the end result of one day’s studio jams is remarkable: imagine what would’ve happened if they had, say, a week. Then again, maybe it’s best they didn’t. There’s a singular electricity that courses between musicians when they work together for the first time, and these two didn’t just tap into it - - they mainlined. Far from mere documentation of particularly inspired extemporaneous exercise, First Meeting is an impressive piece of work, that well-represents a brilliantly synergistic moment.
